My first triathlon…Clanwilliam Freshpak Fitness Festival

Wow, it has been ages since I last wrote anything. Our 2 months of Base Preparation Phase is officially finished and we are into the Base Transition Phase now for 2 months. This kicked off with out very first triathlon when we took part in the Clanwilliam Freshpak Fitness Festival.

Clanwilliam is about 2 and a half to 3 hours drive from Cape Town so we went up on the Friday and booked to stay at a guesthouse called Blommenberg. The drive was easy especially after we put a in a cd of BBC 4 comedy shows that my husband had found online. It past the time with a great deal of chuckles and even some guffawing. Good stuff. My introduction to cycling…

Yesterday, in a rainy day, I picked up my new (secondhand) bicycle from Cycle Traders. It is a Scott Speedster with Ultergra parts and Shimano wheels…apparently that’s good. I also got some mountain bike cleats and shoes as these are easier to work than road bike cleats and tyre changing things and hopefully everything that I need to get out on the road.

Today dawned beautifully clear and sunny (though it was still dark when I got up). With the bike and everything else that I could possible need packed into the car (seats folded down), I headed through to join the Embark group. The training schedule said that we needed to do a 3 hour out and back ride followed by a 15 minute run. Being my first time on the road I accepted that I might only go for 2 hours, but would see how I was feeling. Keep reading »

My sister’s wedding

My sister is now a married lady. I am so happy that she has found a man who can sweep her off her feet and love her like she is meant to be loved! The whole thing happened like a whirlwind and I can’t believe that the wedding has come and gone so quickly.

When she asked me to do the wedding cake, I was really honored and the picture that she showed me was a fairly simple design. I hope to get some of the professional photos too, but in the mean time here are some amateur ones. I found the beautiful cake topper in Germany and it really finished the cake off beautifully. (It is available for future hire)

Week 3 begins

So officially I am entering week 3 of my training program with Embark. Unofficially I haven’t been to one group training session yet, don’t have a bicycle and the doctor has booked me off for a week. Sigh!

The training was going well and I was especially enjoying the couple of swimming sessions that I did. Thank goodness for friends who understand the program and swimming. Then I went to my home town to assist with the final preparations of my sister’s wedding. An amazing bachelorette’s party, quite chilly wedding day and sleeveless bridesmaids dress have resulted in me being man down. I even went to the doctor to get some antibiotics, nasal spray, cortisone and anything else that they would let me have.

Ultimately the result is that no training happened in week 2 and very little training will be happening in week 3. My mission for this week is to get the bicycle. I’m going for a second hand one. I did have one lined up, but it fell through, so currently we are waiting for something else to come up in my price range. Really need to have that sorted by the end of the week and start getting some saddle time in.

oh dear dear dear….

I officially start training on Monday, but after chatting to a friend about the training program I know that I need to get a little fitter before starting. She joined joined one of the other triathlon groups for training last week to see what it is like and the stories of running up hill for 12 minutes made me scared. Tie that in to the fact that I have my sister’s wedding in exactly 2 weeks and have picked up a few nasty kilograms from a 4 week holiday and I need to do some serious work. Keep reading »

Committed…maybe someone should do that to me…

I have just entered the Specsavers 70.3 Ironman in East London on the 22nd of January 2012. I should be committed to an institution.

After 4 weeks away on an amazing tour of Germany, eating far too much and exercising far too little, I am officially shaking in my shoes at the idea of starting this training. I have joined a group called Embark and training officially starts on the 1st of August. I really really hope that there is at least one other person there as slow as I am.

I’m enjoying doing the spinning sessions at gym. It’s a start although I realise is not quite the same as getting proper bike time. I will be hopefully buying my bike next weekend (my birthday present from  my wonderful husband) along with a proper swimming costume and all the paraphernalia that is needed for the training to start properly.

The goal is to finish the race, not to win it, but at the same time I want to be comfortable throughout. I know that this is something that I can do with the right training and I just need to get my mind straight. I’m going to track my progress here and hope to write rave reviews on increased fitness, decreased weight and training highs although I’m sure that there will be some lows and tough times too. The mental challenge has begun and that is the biggest obstacle. So, as of now, I am being positive and excited whether I am the fastest of slowest in the group or have to sleep an extra 20 hours on the weekend and end up going to bed at 7pm. This is something that I really want to accomplish. I think I need a mantra….

My very first spinning session

Dreaming is exhausting! I dream most nights. Sometimes it’s just your average randomness, sometimes it’s connected to movies that I’ve been watching or books I’m reading or just general experiences. Every now and then, my mind will dredge up something from my past and work it into my dream in some weird way. Generally my dreams are fairly odd, but I don’t always remember them. I’ve thought about keeping a dream journal, but it’s pretty hard to put my dreams into words and sometimes I just want to forget them. Keep reading »

70.3 Half Ironman – the build up begins

As I sit here in Cape Town with the wind howling, the rain pouring down, a max temp of about 13 degrees celsius for the whole day, wrapped up in blankets and layers of clothing with a hot cup of tea on the way, I wander what on earth I’m doing wanting to compete in the 70.3 Half Ironman event in East London in January.

I haven’t ever done any serious swimming or cycling training. I went on a bicycle last Sunday for the first time in about 8 years and damn, my bum was tender. So where do I begin? Keep reading »

Original Brazilian Blowdry – results day 3

It is now day 3 after having the Original Brazilian Blowdry treatment at Shine Salon with Vanessa Ashworth in Vredehoek, Cape Town (email me if you want her details).Vanessa is a wonderful hairdresser who believes that ripping people off just isn’t an option. Unlike most Salons, especially some of the bigger franchises, she is reasonably priced and doesn’t try to push you through as fast as possible. I actually need to remember to block off more time for an appointment with her so that I don’t have to rush her. Keep reading »

The Original Brazilian Blowdry – second time around (the before)

It has been over a year since the ash cloud caused havoc in the Northern Hemisphere and over a years since I first had a Brazilian Blowdry. Ok, so the two don’t really equate or link at all, but topical is topical.

Winter is here along with woolly socks, big jerseys and the ability to wear my hair down without getting too hot. The dilemma: my hair is very fine and has a nice wave to hit, but has this terrible frizzy/fly-aways factor. It also looks very tatty at the end so I rarely manage to leave it down. As preparation for this blog, I blowdried my hair this morning. Usually I plait it or clip it up and get on with my day, but with winter, it’s a bit chilly to have wet hair the whole day, and I do mean the whole day, it doesn’t dry very well at all. A Whirlwind month topped off with a whirlwind romance!

It is almost a month since my last post and I don’t feel like I’ve touched the ground, but then again I don’t think that I will for the next few months either. So I’ll just continue to fly!

The last month has contained 2 half marathons, Easter, family, Mother’s Day, decisions to start training for a triathlon and most importantly my sister’s engagement!!!!!

First things first: my sister recently spent a couple of years in London, doing her utmost to see as much of the world as possible. Coming from a smallish town many people leave school and head off to places that are more promising in terms of career beginnings so inevitably you meet people from your ‘youth’ in the strangest of places.

My sister has not had the smoothest run with relationships and didn’t have any overwhelming desire to settle down.  So when we heard the news that she had met someone in London we all held our breaths, knowing that she was only going to be over there for a few more months before her visa ran out and she had to come home. Anyway, despite her assurances that she was keeping it light we heard the happiness in her voice and wondered. Keep reading »

My new favourite hair stylist

I often hear, through stories or movies etc, about the relationships that people used to have with the store owners and service providers in their area and I’m sure that in small towns this still happens. You know the kind where the butcher knows your weekly order and you have a tab running with them, or your doctor pops in at your house when you’re sick because he’s a family friend and probably helped your mum give birth to you?

A part of me has always wanted to develop these kinds of relationships. I think that there is such value in having these connections with other human beings, but in this day and age of convenience and speed it gets harder and harder to build those connections. Keep reading »

Expanding my skills to fish – salmon in particular

I am not a great fish lover, in fact the less it tastes like fish the more I like it. Smoked salmon is definitely not on my menu choice, but then I surprise myself by enjoying kippers at breakfast. My palate is weird and let’s just leave it at that.

I read quite a number of magazines especially the health and lifestyle one and in almost every single one there is a diet article including recommendation to eat more oily fish such as salmon. Whenever I read this I generally cringe and think I’ll have to remember to buy some supplements of something to cover the required nutrients that I should be getting from fresh fish. Keep reading »

It’s time for another Original Brazilian Blowdry

I have been overwhelmed by the number of hits that I get on my site for this treatment. It seems that there just isn’t enough information out there to satisfy people with a healthy dose of cynicism.

There are some major horror stories of chemical burns on the scalp going around as well as very dissatisfied people who found that they just did not get what they were hoping for and it is an expensive treatment to walk out of unhappy. Keep reading »
